BOULDER, CO / WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA — Oct., 22, 2025 — CoolPath, a project developer pioneering large-scale ecological restoration, has selected Perennial, a global leader in full-service measurement, monitoring, reporting and verification (MMRV), as the MMRV provider for the California Rangeland Restoration Project — the first project under Verra’s VM0042 methodology to apply compost to degraded rangelands at scale.
The project will also be among the first to leverage VT0014, Verra’s new digital soil mapping tool for soil organic carbon (SOC) quantification, developed by Perennial. By combining high-quality compost application, reseeding, and improved grazing practices with cutting-edge MMRV, the project represents a new frontier for soil carbon projects — one capable of delivering measurable climate, biodiversity, and agricultural benefits.
In its first phase, the California Rangeland Restoration Project seeks to cover 100,000 acres of working rangelands across the state, applying up to 47 million tons of compost and sequestering an estimated 12 million tons of carbon in soils over the project’s lifetime. The project is currently listed as “Under Validation” on the Verra Registry and is expected to complete full registration by late 2025.
In addition to restoring rangelands, the project helps address California’s organic waste diversion mandate, which requires compostable material to be diverted from landfills. Working with partners like Agromin, the project transforms that waste into a valuable soil asset — improving soil health, water retention, and productivity while storing carbon underground. The majority of the project area is protected under conservation easements, ensuring the land remains in agricultural use in perpetuity.
“This partnership with CoolPath shows what’s possible when innovative project development is empowered by cutting-edge science. Our MMRV approach enables us to measure outcomes in novel, first-of-their-kind projects like CoolPath’s where traditional models fall short. Together, we’re setting a precedent for scalable, verifiable carbon removal in U.S. rangelands.”
- Jack Roswell, Co-Founder & CEO of Perennial
“CoolPath’s mission has always been to restore soil health and deliver high-integrity climate solutions. By partnering with Perennial, we can ensure the highest scientific standards for carbon measurement and verification — while making compost-based rangeland restoration an investable, scalable solution for California ranchers and global climate markets.”
- Mike Powers, CEO of CoolPath
“As someone who has ranched these lands for decades, I know firsthand how much potential they have to give back if we take care of them. This project helps us leave the land healthier than we found it — for our cattle, our communities, and the climate. We look forward to working with CoolPath and Perennial to take significant steps to improve our community’s environment!”
- Stan Van Vleck, President of Van Vleck Ranch and one of CoolPath's founding ranching partners
